This is my fourth time in Vancouver since I began my career as an interpreter. The first time, it rained and the conference was so exhausting that I didn’t get to see very much of it. Then, the second and third times, I ended up spending most of my time catching up with old friends. This time around, I intend to spend most of my spare time as a tourist. I arrived 2 days early to do some sightseeing, and will leave a day later. One of my personal goals os to make it around Stanley Park. I am keeping my fingers crossed for a lot of spare time!

11 days of travel

I am currently preparing for an 11 day tour of Eastern Canada. I will be working for a union in Montreal for 4 days (excited for the evenings of fine dining), followed by 2 days in Gatineau for a legal conference, followed by 5 days in Moncton for another union (looking forward to some lobster). The days will be extremely busy, but I am hoping to relax in the evenings with some nice food and a good book.

The workload is getting overwhelming!

So on top of the 11 straight days of conferences out of town, I have to add over 30000 words of translations, 96 pages of proofreading, and an admin assistant on vacation for the next 10 days… Not too sure what to do at this point, I already have other translators and interpreters doing work for me elsewhere… Anyone have any ideas?

Just got back from a conference in beautiful Vancouver. It dealt with health, safety, and the environment. The mayor of Vancouver was the first speaker and I was very impressed by his drive and ambition to make Vancouver the greenest city in the world by 2020. We also heard from a miner who worked at the site where 33 Chilean miners were trapped underground and were miraculously saved several days later. Definitely an eye opener!

I am loving the new world of iPhone 4 apps! The blog app is going to be great for blogging or tweeting on the go. Hopefully, I will be able to update my blog more frequently. I apologize to those who have been following me for the lack of updates.

A week at White Oaks Conference Centre & Resort

I was at a 5-day mining conference this week, and it was wonderful! The pool is well kept, as are the tennis courts and fitness facilities. All the exercise equipment is top-notch and all the amenities are 5-star. The food selection and quality was outstanding, both in the dining room at breakfast and lunch, as well as in the hallways during the breaks. The staff is very friendly, and I noticed that the owner makes a few rounds to make sure that everything is perfect. I also spoke to the in-house AV company, and the director told me that this was a very easy job, as this facility operates like clockwork. I highly recommend this resort if you are looking for a conference venue.

Shortest conference ever!

I was at a shareholders meeting by the airport at the end of June, and we were told that the meeting started at 12:30. After a short presentation starting at 12:32, the speaker asked if there were any questions, and the 3 participants in the crowd said there were none, and the meeting adjourned by 12:40!! I think an 8-minute meeting is going to be hard to beat!!

The Buddy Holly Show

I was at a conference in Charlottetown at the end of June, and a colleague of mine suggested we buy tickets to watch the broadway show called The Buddy Holly Show. It was a great decision!! We ended up with really good seats for an incredible price, and the actors and the music were amazing! Another virtual standing ovation to the cast!
